You’ve probably heard about this epic day but do you know its origin?
We asked Elio, one of our Irish Erasmus student to tell us about this tradition! Who could be more suited than him? 🇮🇪
What is St Patrick?
“It is a celebration of the culture, history and pride of our country. People in Ireland also colloquially refer to St Patrick’s day as Paddy’s Day. He is the patron saint of Ireland.”
How the Irish celebrate?
“We parade through the streets, drink, play music, dance, go to pubs and bars. We drink alcohol, party and have lots of fun! We all wear something green like a jersey, cap, a shamrock on the front of our clothing and some faceprint.”
Why a shamrock as a symbol?
“While trying to convert the Irish into Christians, St Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The three leaves of a shamrock are also said to stand for faith, hope and love. A fourth leaf is where we get the luck from.”
Fun fact
“In Ireland, the MacDonald’s restaurants always do green milkshakes for this day. Some restaurants serve green-coloured burgers and there’s even green beer in some places as well.”
